All functionality — barcode scanning, catalog lookup, Label Mode list building, and derailleur hanger identification — occurs locally on your device. The product catalog is synced to your device so the app can be used fully offline, and your scans and lists are stored only on your device, never uploaded or shared. As described in Section 3 below, we do use an analytics service to collect anonymous usage data and in-app purchase events.
2. Camera and Photos
The app uses your device camera to scan barcodes and to photograph derailleur hangers, and it can access photos you choose from your photo library for hanger identification. All image processing happens on-device using our on-device machine learning engine. Your photos and camera frames are never sent to our servers or any third party, and they are not retained by the app beyond what is needed to show you a result. We request camera and photo access solely to provide these features.
3. Analytics
We use PostHog, a third-party product analytics service, to help us understand how Bike Parts Finder is used and to improve it. PostHog collects anonymous usage and event data (such as which screens and features you use), basic device identifiers (device ID, operating system version, and app version), and in-app purchase events (such as when a purchase is started, completed, or cancelled, and which product was involved). This data is not linked to your name, email address, or any other personally identifying information, and your scanned barcodes, photos, and saved lists are never sent to PostHog or any other third party. Bike Parts Finder does not contain advertising and does not use advertising identifiers or ad-tracking technologies.
